Gabii sa Kabilin 2012

Once a year, museums and heritage sites in Cebu open their doors from 6PM til midnight for Gabii sa Kabilin (Night of Heritage).

I look forward to Gabii sa Kabilin every year, as it gets bigger and better. I have joined the past three Gabii sa Kabilin and I encourage you to take part this year. In 2009, the first time I heard of GSK (it was already on its 3rd year! Where was I hiding before that?!), there were only 6 participating museums, then grew to 9, then 18, and now 20!

The 6th Gabii sa Kabilin will be participated in by the regulars...

  • Basilica Minore del Sto NiƱo
  • Cathedral Museum of Cebu
  • Casa Gorordo Museum
  • Cebu City Museum
  • Cebu Normal University
  • Fort San Pedro
  • Mandaue City Plaza
  • Museo Parian sa Sugbo
  • Museo Sugbo
  • Plaza Independencia
  • Sacred Heart Parish Church/Alternative Contemporary Arts Studio (ACAS)

...and the newbies:

  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
  • College Assurance Plan (CAP) Theater
  • Fo Guang Shan Chu Un Temple
  • Jose R Gullas Halad Museum
  • University of San Carlos Museum

*BPI Museum will be open 10AM to 4PM only. Buntag sa Kabilin ;-)

Arm yourself with a ticket (Php 150, sold at any of the participating sites and Ayala Center Cebu concierge) to be able to go from museum to site to museum and on and on. The ticket also allows you to take unlimited rides on GSK buses and tartanillas. See bus and tartanilla routes below.

You can get a copy of their ebrochure by signing up and downloading here.

For more information, check out Ramon Aboitiz Foundation's website or their facebook page, or give them a call at (032) 418 7234 local 703 and look for Florencio Moreno.

Strolling, Collecting Sights

If you're up for some Seoul shopping, you have a bunch of choices. These are a few that I have come across: Myeongdong (the "fashion district of Seoul" where brand-name shops abound. I hear many Japanese frequent this place just to shop), Insadong (center for arts and traditional culture), and Namdaemun Market (a traditional market with thousands of stalls selling just about anything).

Having no budget for shopping, we strolled along Insadong with our wallets sealed. Insadong is lined with traditional arts and crafts shops, antique stores, souvenir shops, and art galleries. There are also cafes and restaurants in the mix.

Just some unique things that caught my eye. Nice drain, hey?

Even Anguk Station in Insadong welcomes you with art.

A few hundred meters past the tip of Insadong, you will find Cheonggyecheon, an 8.5 kilometer stream running thru downtown Seoul. Prior to 2005, it was a stream hidden from view by an overpass.

Chill. Literally.
The stream drops the temperature of the immediate surroundings by about 3 degrees Celcius.

We headed west to reach Cheonggye Square, the starting point of Cheonggyecheon. Cheonggye Square commemorates the restoration of the stream and symbolizes harmony and peace.
